New Article - Uptime Magazine Aug/Sept Issue – Corbion Ushers in Change with a Focus on Reliability

Large manufacturing facilities depend on heavy equipment. But without a proper maintenance strategy, these assets can lead to countless issues, often expending or exceeding budgeted resources. Any manufacturing organization looking to successfully bridge this resource gap must implement an organization-wide reliability program to save money, time and frustration. This program must develop into or form a cultural basis to evolve into a sustainable business strategy.

Corbion exemplifies this rule. Functioning as a truly global supply chain, the organization is a global leader in sustainable ingredients, manufacturing for certified compostable polylactic acid(PLA), lactic acid, lactic acid derivatives and their food grade counterparts. The organization depends on proven reliability practices to maintain high performance level in its manufacturing processes.

Reliability Tip:

Lubricants- Greases and Oil Shelf Life

Each oil and grease has a shelf life, defined at the period when it can be used while having confidence that degradation has not occurred. Many factors contribute to degradation, with oxidation being the greatest. Oxidation is a natural occurrence when the lubricant is in contact with air. The chemical makeup of oil and grease will have varying degrees of effect on the shelf life.

Environmental and storage conditions have the most effect on the shelf life. What might seem like a small increase in temperature can accelerate the oxidation process. Humidity is also a concern for introducing moisture, so indoor storage is preferred. The type of container that the lubricant is stored could also speed the oxidation process. Steel drums can introduce iron to the lubricant and speed the oxidation process. This may be an important if large storage tanks are used. Plastic containers or liners may mitigate this issue. Agitation of the oil will decrease shelf life, contributing to oxidation and can cause emulsification if any moisture is present.

Inventory levels should typically be maintained at a 3 to 12 months supply, depending on the lubricant. There is no universal standard for the inventory levels or storage durations. If there is a question, a quality test should be performed. A “first in first out” rule should also apply.

The Reliability Game® - Encourage a Proactive Reliability Culture

Trying to change organizational culture is often challenging, but it is also very rewarding. The primary obstacle is that people have a hard time ‘seeing’ the objective.

The Reliability Game® is the solution to this problem. This plant simulation clearly demonstrates the value of proactive reliability practices and the positive effect on the bottom line. It is an educational, fun way to create a common understanding of your reliability business goals.
