Modernize Your Plant with IIoT at Your Own Pace

Jonas Berge outlines the road map on how plants can get an IIot architecture to work with new practices and business models.

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industrie 4.0 enables richer process and asset data for more effective operation. You may be wondering how to get started. Take a phased approach to implementation; starting within the plant, connecting to the Internet much later. Many plants have already started.

Phased approach Some plants already use digital networking at the sensor level and bring the data across the Internet to central operations benefitting from IIoT, but most plants are not. A plant can deploy IIoT step by step. The first several steps do not connect to the Internet so the I&C department can launch this initiative right away. The IT department gets involved when access across the Internet is implemented.

Reliability Tip:

Beneficial Uses of Equipment Criticality Ranking Analysis

It is commonly accepted that there are many benefits to undertaking an Equipment Criticality Ranking initiative. Although most organizations utilize the information derived from this effort to aid in prioritization of executing work management activities, there are a number of additional uses for capturing this key information. Some of the areas that you may want to consider utilizing at your site include but are not limited to the following:

  • Combining with work prioritization codes to aid Schedulers in determining overall work prioritization
  • Adopting an Equipment Failure Management Strategy
  • As part of a Preventive Maintenance Optimization effort
  • When selecting Job Plans to improve
  • In determining that critical equipment contains Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA’s)
  • To ensure that Predictive Maintenance testing is being conducted on applicable critical equipment
  • When identifying which equipment or processes to apply Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM)
  • When evaluating Critical Spares
  • For use in prioritizing which equipment to conduct a Bill of Materials (BOM) study
  • In determining which equipment to develop a Repairable Spares program for
