New White Paper - Instrumentation – It’s Not Just for Process Control Anymore

One significant resource for asset health information that often goes untapped in many plants is the process control system. Many potential failure modes can be discovered in their early stages using instrumentation that was installed primarily for process monitoring and control. For example, if we are already measuring flows and temperatures across a heat exchanger, we can trend this information to determine if fouling is beginning to occur and calculate the optimum time to take the exchanger offline for cleaning. This paper will explore some of the more common ways that process instruments can provide asset health indication and discuss how some advances in wireless technology can open the door to expanding this condition monitoring technique.

Reliability Tip:

Leak Detection Program, Tagging and Repair

Many plants struggle to keep utility bills under control. Compressed air is used in nearly in every manufacturing plant. When is the last time you performed an air leak survey? There are a couple of options for conducting a survey. If you have an ultrasonic leak detector and trained personnel, this can be accomplished in-house. If you are just beginning a leak program then you may want to contract a local Predictive Maintenance service provider to conduct the survey. In either case you will need some form of a tag to identify each leak so the Maintenance Technician can easily locate the leak at time of repair. (Many suppliers have tags for different types of leaks, such as air, water, steam, etc.) When leaks are found a work order should be written so parts and resources can be defined, and the repair scheduled.

Recommended information that should be recorded on the Leak Tag includes:

  • Location
  • Severity of Leak
  • Date
  • Work Order Number

It is not unusual for a plant to see dramatic reductions in compressed air usage from correcting leaks. Several plants have found that they can realize spare compressor capacity with regular leak surveys.

Emerson Helps Companies Reach Top Quartile Performance

Top Three Sources of Dead Money In your Operation (And How to Revive them)

For companies to achieve the highest return on investment, the goal is to extract as much production potential as possible from an asset — running a plant, for example, at the rate of demand for the product. This requires identifying the causes of “dead money” and then taking actions to revive it.

Top Quartile Performance companies are doing just that, generating dramatic asset performance gains of an additional 350 hours of operations per year on average. These additional two weeks of productivity goes right to the bottom line in the form of bigger profits.
