White Paper: Top 5 Maintenance & Reliability Enablers for Improved Operational Performance
Surrounding yourself, your projects, and your initiatives with positive enablers leads to success.
Many improvement initiatives focus on the benefits they can provide, such as cost savings and improved productivity, but overlook the importance of discussing and identifying the enablers that must be in place to achieve the projected benefits. Taking the time to ensure that proper enablers are in place greatly improves an initiative’s chance for sustained success; when these enablers are left to chance, failure is often the result. When you understand, establish, and surround initiatives with a foundation of enablers will lead to success.
This paper discusses the characteristics, impact, and “what to do” of five maintenance and reliability enablers that have a significant impact on operational performance.
- Catastrophic Failure Elimination Focus
- Minimize All Shutdowns
- Aggressive Failure Elimination to Minimize “Recurring Failures”
- Eliminate Self Induced Failures
- Data Driven Decision Making

Reliability Tip:
Work Order Prioritization
Eliminate
emotion and subjectivity when determining the priority of work at your facility. A well-defined set of work order priority codes with clear definitions as to what each code represents (work execution timeframe, impacts on Production, EHS, PM/PdM activities, etc.) should be established. Also, the appropriate response to a work order not only depends on the importance of the work to the local equipment and process, but also on the criticality of that equipment and process. The assignment of your work order priorities should also include a review of the criticality of the equipment assigned to the work orders to focus on “true” high priority work. Communicate the overall work prioritization methodology to all personnel and hold everyone accountable for adherence to the established process.

THE RELIABILITY GAME
The Reliability Game® is an interactive workshop simulation of a plant. |
|
|
Trying to change organizational culture is often challenging, but it is also very rewarding. The primary obstacle is that people have a hard time "seeing" the objective. The Reliability Game® is the solution to this problem. This plant simulation clearly demonstrates the value of proactive reliability practices and the positive effect on the bottom line. It is an educational, fun way to create a common understanding of your reliability business goals.
