Ready for all Applications
Pre-engineered solutions are beneficial for most safety applications on small-medium sized projects. Our standard (CTO) enclosure designs assist with projects of any size.
Emerson’s safety team can help you specify your requirements and when needed we can implement safety projects to meet those requirements, based on pre-engineered standards or custom designs if necessary. We create applications to protect your plant and personnel from hazardous conditions and provide a rapid and coordinated operational response to emergency situations.
Standard solutions are available for applications including Emergency Shutdown, Burner Management, Fire & Gas Detection, High-integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS) and Overfill Protection. Also for applications to replace ageing safety systems that might be causing reliability issues, or concerns about IEC 61511 compliance.

Safety Applications
Burner Management
DeltaV SIS can be deployed as a Burner Management System (BMS), to ensure the safe operation, control and monitoring of industrial burners for boilers or fired heaters. Through proper sequencing and interlocks, the DeltaV SIS BMS application allows the burner unit(s) to go safely through all relevant states, from start-up to operation and shutdown when needed. If required (usually dependant on the size of the burner unit), DeltaV SIS can also provide in automated leak testing of the gas valves.
Emerson’s BMS solution includes a number of pre-built sequences, and a design methodology that helps customers get to grips with specifying sequence logic in an efficient and intuitive way. Our Consultants can advise on BMS design according to the codes, norms and standards applicable in your region.

Prevent Incidents from Occurring
The DeltaV SIS Emergency Shutdown (ESD) solution is designed to prevent hazardous situations from occurring, and can initiate the shutdown of a plant, unit, or piece of equipment should it be required. Sensors detect the onset of hazardous conditions, and the DeltaV SIS logic solver is configured to take your plant to a safe state, by manipulating the required final elements (valves and pumps).
The DeltaV SIS provides SIL3 reliability in compliance with IEC61508 and IEC61511 international standards, and in addition has many innovations: repeat confirmation built in to the operator graphics, version control that can be defined by SIL level, powerful voting functionality, and a very flexible Cause and Effect Matrix (CEM) block that is intuitive and easy to use.
Mitigate the consequences of events when they occur
IEC 61511 recognises Fire and Gas Systems (FGS) as mitigation systems, reducing the consequences of an incident AFTER it has occurred, by raising the alarm and taking automatic actions such as deluge systems and closing ventilation. This is done to gain time for people to evacuate the area, contain the incident from escalating and allow for emergency response teams to assess and deal with the incident.
By monitoring process areas where fire, or potentially flammable gas or toxic gas build-up may occur, the DeltaV SIS system can detect hazardous events, alert personnel and initiate timely actions in order to minimise the consequences of the incident.

Prevent Equipment Damage due to Overpressure
High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS) are a special type of safety function typically used where process design pressure ratings change, such as where a high-pressure rated pipeline enters a lower rated processing unit or measuring station. In normal operation, dangerously high pressures should not occur. But if they do, the HIPPS must react quickly to shut off the upstream source of high pressure and prevent it from reaching the low pressure side of the process plant.
DeltaV SIS can be used as the Logic Solver in a complete HIPPS solution for SIL 3 application. The pre-engineered solutions with standard field enclosure designs suit this application well. Emerson’s safety team has standard HIPPS application solutions ready to deliver.

Prevent Tank Overfill
Tank overfill is a common potential hazard which can lead to the release of hazardous, toxic and/or highly flammable fluids to the surrounding environment. With such large volumes of fuel or chemicals being stored in tank farms, the consequences can be catastrophic.
It is essential that a tank overfill protection system is deployed to enhance existing safety measures, guarding against the potential hazards that would result from a storage tank being overfilled. A central part of this solution is DeltaV SIS which monitors level devices to automatically shut off the feed to the tanks if the level reaches the high cut off limit. The SIS Logical Solver communicates with the intelligent tank level sensors via HART protocol to diagnose faults before they case spurious trips.
Tank Overfill Protection systems often require relatively small I/O quantities distributed over a large geographical area. Our pre-engineered DeltaV SIS Field Enclosures are ideal for this application.
