Emerson's Micro Motion® Coriolis Flowmeters Meet New Official API Standard for Custody Transfer of Petroleum Products and Crude Oil

With Micro Motion Coriolis Flowmeters, Petroleum measurements no longer need multiple devices to make API calculations

Boulder, Colorado -- (November 14, 2002) Emerson Process Management today applauded the new API Official Standard as a major step in making custody transfer an easy and standardized process for its customers. Emerson's Micro Motion® Coriolis flowmeters meet the new standard and perform the API petroleum custody transfer calculations that previously required multiple devices.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) recently published Chapter 5.6, Measurement of Liquid Hydrocarbons by Coriolis Meters, which is now an official standard and is part of the Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards (MPMS). Chapter 5.6 replaces the two previous Draft Standards that covered Coriolis custody transfer of petroleum products and crude oil.

"The timing of the Coriolis Standard could not have been better," said Gene Shanahan, Micro Motion's vice president of sales and marketing. "We recently released an enhancement to our digital processing MVD(tm) technology transmitter, which uses API equations and algorithms to calculate volume at standard temperature and API gravity for crude oils, petroleum products and lube oils. This enables Micro Motion customers to use one instrument to determine standard volume and temperature-compensated density for custody transfer on pipelines, at loading terminals and at LACT units. As a result, customers can reduce their capital investments and maintenance costs."

Micro Motion's exclusive MVD technology also offers flow-weighted temperature and density averaging, which provides additional information for petroleum quality and quantity determinations for custody transfers. Other benefits from this technology include:

  • Clean, noise-free, stable signals that can measure multiple variables for improved measurement performance and process consistency
  • Built-in smart diagnostics to identify and resolve problems easily and maximize uptime
  • 2-4 times faster response than analog devices, improving repeatability during proving
  • Integral or remote mounting options with standard 4-wire signal cable to save money
  • Scalability for any flow or density application
  • API's Chapter 5.6 Measurement of Liquid Hydrocarbons by Coriolis Meters covers crude oil, hydrocarbon products and "dense phase" fluids like LPG, NGL, and LNG. The standard includes:

  • Installation and operating recommendations
  • Proving procedures
  • Proving report forms
  • API is the primary trade association for the oil and natural gas industry. U.S. federal and state laws and regulations have long referenced API standards. API standardization activities identify and support proven, sound engineering and operating practices for use in the petroleum industry.
